“Shame corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change.”

Dr. Brené Brown

What Is Shame?

Shame is an intensely painful emotion that plunges us into a state of self-doubt and despair, making us grapple with feelings of inadequacy, unworthiness, and the haunting sense of being "not enough." It often whispers insidiously in our minds, echoing thoughts like:

"I'm a failure."

"I'm not lovable."

"If they truly knew me, they would abandon me."

Unlike guilt, which focuses on the actions we take by saying, "I did something bad," shame goes much deeper, attacking our very identity with a ruthless declaration: "I am bad." It festers in the shadows of secrecy and silence, thriving on judgment and the fear of exposure, leaving us feeling isolated and misunderstood.

Common Sources of Shame

  • Childhood trauma or criticism

  • Body image or appearance-based judgment

  • Perfectionism or fear of failure

  • Cultural, religious, or family expectations

  • Abuse, addiction, or mental health stigma

  • Feeling "different” or “not enough”

How Shame Affects Us

Unchecked shame can lead to:

  • Depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem

  • People-pleasing or overachievement

  • Avoidance of intimacy and emotional shutdown

  • Addiction or compulsive behaviours

  • Chronic guilt, resentment, and anger

Healing from Shame

A skill that can be learned

1. Name It: Shame thrives in the dark. Saying, "This is a shame," begins to break its grip.

2. Practice Self-Compassion: Speak to yourself as you would to a friend. Shame feeds off harsh self-talk.

3. Seek Connection: Tell your story to someone who has earned the right to hear it. Empathy is transformative.

4. Challenge Shame Messages: Ask: Whose voice is this? Is it true? Is it kind? Replace it with a more grounded inner narrative.

5. Develop Shame Resilience: Dr. Brené Brown defines shame resilience as the ability to recognize shame, move through it with compassion, and come out stronger.

"If you put shame in a Petri dish, it needs three things to grow: secrecy, silence, and judgment. If you put the same amount of shame in a Petri dish and douse it with empathy, it can't survive."
